On the rare occasion that my chef husband is off on the weekend, my husband, daughter (3 years old), and I like to venture out and have a lunch or brunch and discover more about the Beijing food scene. It took about three years of trial and error (lots of error), but our toddler holds up pretty well in hotels and restaurants nowadays. As a mother I do still very much prefer a kid’s friendly environment. It makes the experience less stressful. We all know if the kids are happy the parents are happy, and we heard that the brunch at hotel EAST does just that. They have a child-friendly brunch on Saturday, and Sunday at Feast inside the hotel. We heard and read good things about Feast so naturally we had to check it out.
I was very pleasantly surprised at the hip feel of the hotel and the open and light dining area at Feast. The chalkboard drawings make upbeat space that is both fun for adults and kids. The open kitchen is stretched out over the length of the restaurant and makes for a entertaining view, looking at the hustle and bustle in the kitchen. The dress code and the environment are very laid back, but the service is really nice and attentive. Our daughter was off to the play area in the back which has “no way my kid can escape from here” written all over it. There is only one way in and out. If you are in the dining room, you can see them if they decide to leave the play room, and they can easily find you at your table. The play area is decked out with timeless toys and arts and crafts. A preschool teacher is in the play area to keep the kids under control after they attacked the dessert station and are on a sugar high. There was also a friendly jester who did some balloon crafts for all the little ones at brunch.
The buffet was extensive with starters and desserts. The main is an a la carte choice from a beautiful menu with great choices for everybody, from baby chicken to eggs Benedict to pasta with lobster. We had a blast trying all the different starters like sushi, dumplings, cold cuts, salads, noodles cooked to order and a cheese corner. I had to go back several times to sample all the cheeses; nice cheeses are a rare treat in Beijing so I indulged. There are enough choices for the little ones. Ours had lots of sushi and desserts.
Feast brunch is a great lazy weekend brunch for the whole family. It can be made in to a day trip by visiting Indigo Mall, during good air days the kids can play and run next to the hotel in their outside space. Don’t forget to sample the signature dessert pavlova cake, a super airy, fresh, and sweet end to a laid back brunch at Feast.
