Laura Roark, from the Mississippi Delta in the US, has lived in China for over nine years. A full-time Montessori teacher at the Family Learning House and a single mom to Maia (7 months old), Laura rarely has time to dry her hair in the morning, let alone book an hour at the hairdresser. Laura’s lusciously thick hair gave the Toni&Guy salon director a lot to work with, and she was happy to experiment with a new image. "I’m not afraid of color," Laura exclaimed. Because of her limited prep time in the mornings, Laura wanted to keep a style that could easily convert into an up-do or be pulled back into a bun. With this in mind, color was added to the under-sections of her hair to create a "wow" factor when it was pulled up. "The last time I did something nice was eight months ago when I got a gift voucher for a spa," says Laura. In addition to her new look, this busy mom recently had her braces taken off. She couldn’t wait to flash her pearly whites for the first time in months.
Get the Look:
Robert Andrews, Toni&Guy salon director and hairstylist from the UK, maintained Laura’s natural chocolate tones on top but gave her a color boost underneath. He thinned out Laura’s hair so it was easier to manage, but kept the illusion of volume by adding funky tones of deep red and black in the under-sections.
While Laura’s color was setting, resident makeup artist Bonnie Wang went to work using Lancome products. She applied a light coat of liquid foundation, followed by powder to set the base. For smoky eyes, Bonnie used three eyeshadow tones in shades of charcoal, making sure to work from light to dark. She then used an eyelash curler to get the perfect curl before applying mascara. For a natural flush, rose-ink crème blush was applied just under the cheekbones. Bonnie finished the look off with a combination of lipsticks: Autumn (Estée Lauder), Raspberry Glace (Clinique), and clear Juicy Wear Gloss (Lancôme).
Robert trimmed Laura’s thick hair but decided against adding extra layers, which are hard to maintain on a day-to-day basis. For added texture, he used volume mousse on the roots and curl spray (both Label M). You can get this look at home by drying your hair, placing sections in large rollers, and giving it a second hot blast with the dryer; allow hair to cool, then remove the rollers. Follow with volume mousse, or talcum powder at the roots.
