A Walk and Discussion at the Lama Temple and Confucian Temple, Oct 18
All ages. The Lama Temple and the Confucian Temple/Imperial Academy are well-known for their association with Buddhism and Confucianism respectively. First, they’ll be looking at the religious and philosophical context of both locations. Then we’ll consider how the Qing emperors appropriated the forms and functions of Tibetan Buddhism; talk about how Confucianism became the dominant ruling ideology and the role that the system of exams and academies. La Voix Humaine – Beijing Music Festival, Oct 19
All ages. Belgium’s premier new opera company Muziektheater Transparant is invited by the Beijing Music Festival to bring “La Voix Humaine” in a concept of director Wouter Van Looy, soprano Naomi Beeldens and pianist Jean Malaise. This one-act opera for soprano and orchestra is composed by Francis Poulenc on the basis of a written work by Jean Cocteau. RMB 180. 7.30pm. (www.bmf.org.cn )
European Union Film Festival, Oct 14-31
All ages. The European Union Film Festival is blowing into town once again, with a month-long program of feature films from almost every member nation. The screenings are taking place at Star City and BC MOMA, and a range of national cultural centers around town. The cinema screenings are RMB 20 each, while the cultural center screenings are free.
