It has been reported from many news sources that celebrated British cartoon, Peppa Pig, has recently adopted a thuggish demeanor and the powers that be aren’t having any of it, as it has now been completely removed from the video streaming site Douyin.
The show began its run in China three years ago, and is now experiencing some growing pains as it has been adopted by China’s shehuiren subculture. This reactionary group, lashing back at pressures to be a positive member of society, have been turning the character into a provocative, attitude-wielding gangster through a series of memes and videos that have been extremely popular across social media.
We were wondering why we’ve lately seen numerous teens and adults sporting the porcine creature on t-shirts and jackets around the capital.
This couldn’t have come at a worse time for the brand as it is still very popular amongst families here in China, and plans to expand into theme parks in Beijing and Shanghai have also been made. You can read more about this here.
So far, unsullied versions of the show are still available through many other streaming platforms, and we have the feeling that this won’t be a complete ban on Peppa across the board. After all, it’s not the creators’ fault that this character has recently been experiencing a fall from grace. However, it doesn’t take much to push a children’s entertainment icon onto the chopping block. Just look at what happened to Winnie the Pooh.
