American Jack Shang-Ji Hsu is the CEO of Ivy Academy. He’s been living in Beijing with his wife Pui Yi Sum, a Singaporean investment banker, since 2003 and the couple have recently had their first child, 18-month-old Evan Shu-Kai. The family loves exploring the capital and took time out of their day to tell beijingkids about their favorite haunts and new discoveries.
Favorite Place to Shop
For children’s clothes, Pui Yi likes Shin Kong Place and Pacific Century Place. Jack looks for gadgets and electronics online at Taobao.
Favorite Snack
Shaved mango ice from Ding Tai Fung.
Date Night
We’re both workaholics so the best date night would be spent at home!
New Discoveries in Beijing
Pui Yi likes to visit new malls. Last week, we went to Fortune Mall. Jack likes to try out new golf courses; his current favorite is California Coast on South 6th Ring.
Favorite Family Restaurant
For comfort food, we like Singaporean cuisine. Favorites include Lau Pa Sak for laksa, Prima Taste Kitchen for chicken rice and the kid-friendly Malacca Legend (Ocean Paradise) for beef hor fun.
Best Place to Play
Evan enjoys playing anywhere, as long as he feels safe. It doesn’t have to be terribly exciting; it could be a swimming pool, shopping mall, or even Starbucks. We enjoy watching him experience new sights, smells and sounds.
Family Rituals
We take Evan back to Taiwan and Singapore once a year to meet his grandparents and other relatives. Hopefully, he will pick up some authentic Taiwanese on these trips.
