 Anti-Social Media Dining: Caravan Unplugged! Aug 19

All ages. North African restaurant Caravan is offering patrons 50 percent off every Monday for those willing to literally and figuratively unplug from their devices to enjoy their meal and company. The rules set mean that you must leave your phone at the bar. No photo taking, posting, sharing, or commenting on social media. It’s time to engage with something other than your device when you are out. The initiative will no doubt get us thinking about how much we interact with our devices on an evening out, and perhaps help us to reconnect with the person in front of us and our surroundings. Ready to unplug for an evening of anti-social media? Put the phone down and get tucked in!

Gamification 2.0: Learning and Innovating Through Play, Aug 22

All ages. Gamification is when a company or organization uses concepts from games and adds them to products, services, or campaigns to make them more productive or fun. Press Start Hong Kong believes this definition is too simple. Join them for a public seminar about how games can teach us to see the world in a new way. Samajam: Kids Show, Aug 24
Ages 4+. This is a 200 percent participatory musical show, in which all participants receive several musical instruments during the performance. They become the performing musicians of the show. Created with the little ones in mind, it is an interactive musical performance. Each child and parent will receive drum sticks, whirly tubes or an African djembe and will be led by talented musicians to create something extraordinary.

Pizza Making Class, Aug 24 – 25
Kids. This month, Domain is teaming up with OXO to teach little chefs how to make that childhood staple – pizza! Start your child’s love of cooking early and enjoy some delicious food. Russian State Ballet: Swan Lake, Aug 24 – 25 
All ages. Swan Lake is one of Tchaikovsky’s best works, featuring some of ballet’s most memorable music and breathtaking dance. It is a tale of two young women, Odette and Odilie, who resemble each other so strikingly one can easily be mistaken for the other. You will have a wonderful evening out and memories which you will cherish long after the final curtain falls.

Hike: Kids Club: Changyucheng Village, Aug 25
Ages 5-12. This is an easy walk up to a reservoir, about 3-4 hours of walking with an optional steeper section of trail to hike, totaling about 4-8 km. Enjoy nature with the family by picnicking in the forest beside the reservoir and hiking along the Changping mountains. Walk back through Changyucheng, a Ming Dynasty-era village where there are lanes, houses, temples, and a military barracks.

Ages 7-16. Ever wondered how action stars perform those stunts? Then Imagine China’s action camp is the place to learn! Learn how to vault a fence, flip on a trampoline, balance on a line, climb a wall. This camp is all about being active, combining parkour, gymnastics, climbing, balance, and coordination.

 NCPA Opera La Fanciulla del West, Aug 20 – Aug 25

All ages. La Fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) is Puccini’s seventh opera. It is regarded as one of his mature works, along with La Boheme, Tosca, and Madame Butterfly, and is the only major opera to depict California’s gold rush. The music is interspersed with contemporary folk and Native American music, giving a strong regional color to the very American setting. This production is the first Chinese performance of the opera. It was created by international director Sardius Strasberg, an American creative team, and features the gifted Italian maestro Batistoni, along with three world-class singers Amari Niza, Marco Birdy, and Claudio Sculla.

“Madagascar The Musical”, Aug 22 – 25  

Ages 5+. From the producers of Shrek: The Musical comes a brand-new show for kids and families: Madagascar: The Musical! Study Trip: Folk Handicrafts and History in Yu County, Hebei Province (2 days), Aug 24 – 25
Ages 8+. Interested in the outdoors? Traditional Chinese crafts? This two-day trip might be perfect for you. Great Wall Camping: See the Sunset and Sunrise from China’s Great Wall, Aug 24 – 25
Age varies depending on ability. Spend two days on the Great Wall, experience the Great Wall at sunset and sunrise, and camp overnight beside or in a Great Wall tower. This camping experience is organized by Cultural Exchange Trips (CET) who will provide camping equipment, transportation, and guides (an English speaking guide and local guide). The hiking portion is relatively easy but there are some steep sections, please contact CET to see if this tour is right for your family.

Girl Scout Registration, Aug 24 – 30
Ages 4+. If your daughter would like to participate in the Girl Scouts, registration is coming up! The Beijing Girl Scouts Chapter is hosting an info session for their program at the International School of Beijing (ISB) on Aug 24 and Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) on Aug 31. The Girl Scouts team will also be recruiting leaders for newly forming troops and parent volunteers. USA Girl Scouts Overseas (USAGSO) serves girls living overseas and girls attending American or international Schools. All girls with foreign (non-Chinese) passports can join and there are places available for kids from K-12.

Kids 12 – 18. Get the kids excited with first-hand experience of Tsinghua International School’s X-Lab robotic education program. 12- to 18-year-olds can participate in a number of courses taught by Tsinghua Robotics PhD Dr. Sotirios and the center’s Robotics team. Students will learn about motion control by assembling their own wheeled robot. Participants will be able to add ultrasonic sensors to their robots, as well as a camera and an LED using ROS-Python-OpenCV to classify colors and detect target objects. Next, students will be able to add a robotic arm and spend some reviewing the studies course.

Hello Mars: 3D Digital Space Exhibition, Now – Aug 25

All ages. Have your kids ever talked about space? Are they interested learning more about all the wonder that exists above our heads? It’s time to take the kids on a walk through space at this educational and immersive exhibition about the planet Mars. There is a lot to explore at this exhibition, which is split up into 14 different sections where the kids can step into space and enjoy elements of surprise with extraterrestrial pop-ups and interactive projections. Chinese Summer Camp for Kids, Now – Aug 30
Ages 15 months to 5 years. Each week there are different topics for the classes, such as science, Chinese calligraphy, art, craft, music, and games. To improve children’s Chinese language skills, the teacher will speak Chinese during the class. Picasso – Birth of a Genius,  Now – Sept 1
All ages. UCCA is pleased to announce that Picasso – Birth of a Genius—the most significant exhibition of work by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) ever to take place in China—will be presented at UCCA between June 15 and September 1, 2019. The exhibition, which offers a comprehensive overview of the first three decades of Picasso’s career, is drawn from the collection of the Musée national Picasso-Paris. It includes 103 works in total, including paintings, sculptures, and works on paper.

The Beatles: Beat On, Now-Sep 15

All ages. The Beatles were a legendary rock group that formed in Liverpool, England, in 1960, and went on to transform popular music into a creative art form over the next decade. As one of the most popular bands of all time, they wrote songs like “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” “Penny Lane,” “With A Little Help From My Friends,” “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown),” “Day Tripper”, and “Come Together.” Apart from the music, the exhibition is also a panoramic look back into the Beatles’ golden era of the 60s.
