Sat, Jul 24
Get your feet wet (or not, it’s up to you) this weekend with a hike along the gorgeous White River, north of Beijing. This trek is great for kids about 7 years old and up, and does involve a bit of clambering over rocks and boulders. Starting with a 45 minute hike into the valley, you’ll then follow the winding river bed for a relatively easier stroll. Enjoy a picnic lunch and maybe a dip, then head back to the bus to return to the city.
7.30am, first departure. Bus pickup from Lido and Liangmaqiao. RMB 400 for adults, RMB 180 for kids 7-12
Shadow puppetry is a traditional Chinese art form that was inscribed in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2011. Puppeteers create colorful silhouette puppets from leather or paper and use them to animate traditional folk stories and songs from behind a backlit screen. In short, it’s a really interesting and beautiful Chinese art form, and one that’s well worth delving into during your time in China! This workshop – held in the hutongs around Shichahai lake – offers a great introduction to the art, and attendees will get to create their own puppet, perform in a play, and take the puppet home afterwards.
2.30-4.30pm. Shichahai hutongs. RMB 328 or RMB 598 for 1 adult and 1 child.

“Balloon Rhapsody” Interactive Family Comedy Show
It’s got balloons, it’s got acrobats, it’s got comedy, it’s got clowns… what exactly is this play about? We have no idea! But it sounds and looks very fun, not to mention great for kids. This interactive (again, we’re not exactly sure how it’s interactive, unless that just means you contribute loads of big loud belly laughs) comedy show is being performed this Sunday evening at the National Gallery Art Center in Haidian district, and reportedly boasts some of the top names in the Chinese clowning biz.
7.30-9.30pm. National Gallery Art Center, Haidian. From RMB 103.
