Last weekend I discovered a hidden gem roughly two hours outside of Beijing’s city center: the Guyaju Cliff Dwellings, an easy but fascinating hike through more than 100 dwellings carved directly into the rocks covering some 26 km of mountain. Perhaps more interesting is that we know absolutely nothing about the ancient people who once lived here because they seem to have just disappeared. No cave paintings, tools, or pottery have ever been found at this UNESCO world heritage site. The mystery, combined with the views and cave exploration, makes this an ideal family day trip.
