Japanese food isn’t always sushi rolls and sukiyaki. Don’t get me wrong, I could happily live off of those for the rest of my life, but when you’re looking for a fun night out with friends, a visit to Beyond Yakitori offers just that.
This small yakitori restaurant located in Topwin Center wow’d Beijing’s foodies when they first opened a few years ago with their contemporary yakitori menu and over the years they keep coming up with new things to tantalize our taste buds.
Today we’re checking out how Beyond Yakitori makes their charcoal grilled prawns (RMB 88).
Pretty often the tastiest dishes require only a few quality ingredients – and this is one of them.
Ingredients:
Prawns 5
Butter 25g
Truffle Paste 8g
Garlic 1g
Salt 3g
Gobo (Black shoot) 25g
Shiso Leaf
Instructions:
1. Clean the prawns and skewer them from the middle
2. Grill over charcoal till medium to medium well. You can do it over a pan but you’ll need actual charcoal to get that smokey flavor.
For the garnish:
1. Soften the butter and combine with grated garlic and salt.
2. Shred the black shoots into ribbons, soak in cold water, and fry till golden in 160-degree oil
3. Cut the leaf into strips and fry lightly in 160-degree oil
4. Spread the truffle garlic butter on the side of the plate, place the black shoots at the bottom, then the prawns and the leaves. Decorate with lemon wedges.
While it’s 100% possible to simply grill just the pawns and sprinkle with a hint of salt, I really would recommend taking the extra time and effort to make the garnish and definitely the truffle butter spread. Prawns have such a light sweet flavor that the garnish and truffle butter will add an extra “oomph” to your dish and take it to the next level.
To taste it done by professionals, pay a visit to Beyond Yakitori. Flame-doused, flavorful Japanese-style skewers are served at this trendy eatery. Aside from the tasty meats on sticks, be sure to try the cushion soft Scotch egg, and a glass of smooth sake. Their Scotch egg is one of those classic items that’s been on the menu since the beginning and with good reason. For the majority of us this one’s too hard to try to make at home, so definitely treat yourself to one when you visit Beyond Yakitori.
If you love to drink, with the order an alcoholic drink per person, you get 20% off on most of their menu.
