Since becoming a parent, I have found myself drawn to any cause giving kids a chance for better futures. Charities, orphanages, educational outreach and such tug at my heartstrings. Who doesn’t want to help a child? Living in China magnifies the many needs children face – we see more poverty than perhaps we did at home, yet we also see such potential in children if only they are given the opportunity. I know there are many others out there – parents or not – who feel the same urge to help as I do.
I was struck by a recent request for support sent out by the New Life Centre in Shunyi. NLC houses and educates underprivileged children (ages 7-19) to help them become self-sufficient adults. Generous donor support in the past has helped these children each year. The director there tells me that NLC has around 50 kids, but that the center is currently bankrupt with very little donation income.
However, it is help for the older children that has become the director’s immediate focus. There are five kids who, in an effort to complete their higher education, need sponsors to complete expenses including school fees and essentials. These needs are urgent, with fees required by August 20.
After graduating from the New Life Centre programs, these children are often accepted by colleges and universities in the city. Regardless of the vocation these students choose, the center aids in helping them gain self-confidence, self-respect and empowerment over their futures. The center enriches young lives and helps create opportunities for them.
Below are the needs of a few children. With the deadline of August 20, contact Ginny at 1391 177 9630 or newlifecentre2@safe-mail.ne for more information on these or other children. Consider giving a gift of education to a child in need.
