Reading is a simple and affordable pleasure that stimulates both mind and spirit. Books challenge us to see the world with fresh eyes, immerse ourselves in strange new environments, and push the limits of our imagination. For some, however, the simple joy of reading must be set aside.
Roundabout Charity, a Beijing-based charity store with projects throughout mainland China, is hosting its largest ever book fair on Saturday, September 17 to raise money for children in need of live-saving medical procedures. The event will be held in cooperation with the British School of Beijing’s Shunyi Campus The fair will continue at the institution during school hours from 9am to 3.30pm until Friday, October 14. Books will be frequently restocked during this period and the sale will be open to everyone in the community.
There will be thousands of books for sale, including adult and children’s fiction, picture books for smaller children, and non-fiction books. There will also be a variety of Chinese language and other foreign language books. Prices range from as little as RMB 1 for children’s books to RMB 10 for paperbacks and RMB 20 for hard covers. Other types of publications, such as coffee books, will be priced individually.
Earlier this year, Roundabout Charity’s book fair at the British School of Beijing raised over RMB 60,000 to help three children get life-saving surgery. All of the money raised will go towards paying for the children’s medical expenses.
If you are interested in volunteering, Roundabout is looking for people to help out at both the book fair and its charity store. The following positions are available at the store:
Window Display Designer
Visual Merchandising Assistant
Store Assistants
Volunteer Coordinator
General Sorting
Book Sorters
In addition, Roundabout continues to accept book donations. Items can be brought to the British School of Beijing on September 17 or dropped off from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm at the Roundabout store in Shunyi. The charity particularly welcomes children’s books for donation to orphanages and migrant schools. However, any books that are in good condition will be accepted.
