If you are looking for something to do this Chinese New Year, come to Comptoirs de France at East Lake Villa’s and learn to knit! The Beijing Guild will hold a smaller than normal gathering from 1-4pm on Tuesday January 24.
The Beijing Guild is a group of women from all walks of life, who meet once a week to knit. Knitting is the main event, but there is also crocheting, needlepoint, needle felting, and quilting. While attendees vary in age, skill and nationality, they all share a common interest in crafts and chatting.
Once a month, the Guild holds a workshop focusing on a new skill or project. If you don’t want to participate in the workshop, the regular guild gathering is scheduled at a cafe.
The workshops, which are typically held in private homes, cost RMB 200. This cost covers the cost of all necessary supplies. Any left over money is used to purchase yarn and other supplies for items donated to charity.
The group focuses on knitting, but the gatherings are really about chatting with both new and old friends. As a member and regular attendee of the Guild, I just love attending weekly to find out what someone is doing each week. I hardly ever sit by the same person two meetings in a row.
Meetings are never in the same place. Each week, they move from private homes where everyone pitches in for snacks and drinks to dining in different cafes around Chaoyang District, such as Comptoirs de France or Queen’s Cafe.
Currently, the Beijing Guild meets every Tuesday from 1- 4pm at a different location. Starting in February, they will also meet on every fourth Thursday of the month from 5.30-8.30pm at East Lake Villas. The group is flexible though and will increase the frequency of meetings if there is a demand for it.
