How’s this for a nostalgia trip? Iconic US kids’ magazine Highlights For Children is launching a version in simplified Chinese called Highlights Talent Youth (Highlights 天才少年). The announcement was made in Beijing last Wednesday at an event attended by US Ambassador to China Gary Locke.
Started in 1946, the original Highlights has played a prominent role in the American children’s magazine market for 66 years. The publication’s mission is “fun with a purpose,” and contains regular features like Hidden Pictures, the Timbertoes, and Goofus and Gallant.
Highlights magazine CEO Kent Johnson commented that his great grandparents had always wanted to “celebrate children’s experiences in many different cultures around the world” and that they would be “so pleased to see how far their magazine had traveled.”
The Chinese Highlights, like its US counterpart, is recommended for ages 6 to 12. To date, the company has sold more than 1 million puzzle books and other products in China, including a magazine for younger kids called Highlights Talent Baby. Highlights Talent Youth is produced in collaboration with Xueyouyuan (学友园), a leading Chinese publisher of educational materials.
