BISS Welcomes New Elementary School Principal
Beijing BISS International School welcomes new Elementary School Principal Kyra Gailis. Originally from Ocala, Florida, Gailis has worked as an elementary teacher, a Primary Year Program (PYP) coordinator, an associate director, and head of lower school at the International School of Latvia. Gailis holds a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Master’s of Education in International School Administration. Gailis speaks fluent English, Latvian, and some Russian, and intends to study Mandarin next.

ISB Student Invited to Prestigious Summer Math Program
Courtney Guo, a Grade 10 student from The International School of Beijing, was invited on an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2012 Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from June 5-29. Guo was one of 56 students selected from a pool of over 210,000 AMC 10 (American Mathematics Competitions) and AMC 12 participants. She qualified for MOSP by writing the 3-hour AIME (American Invitational Mathematics Examination), followed by the 9-hour USAJMO (United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad).
CISB Opens New Shunyi Campus
For the 2012-2013 academic year, The Canadian International School of Beijing is opening a Shunyi campus across from River Garden Villa. The new campus will offer a Montessori curriculum for ages 18 months to 6 years. The goal at this campus is to provide a holistic education within a fully-prepared, peaceful environment for children. PMT Art Shop Opens a Second Branch in 798 Art District
In August 2009, photographers Min and Ting opened a gallery called PMT. This past spring, they opened a second location in Beijing’s 798 Art District. The shop sells original photographs by Chinese artists, furniture, leather products, art-inspired clothing, ceramics, and PMT-themed t-shirts.

Traders Upper East Hotel’s Launches Weekend Upper East Kids’ Club
Traders Upper East Hotel invites all guests from 2 to 11 years of age to the Happy Weekend Upper East Kids’ Club. Every Saturday and Sunday between 11.30am-2pm at Wu Li Xiang Chinese restaurant, families can choose from “Monk Jumps Over the Wall” set lunch with seven courses (RMB 120 per person, minimum of three adult diners) or a family set menu with ten courses (RMB 198 per person, minimum of three adult diners). Meals for kids under 6 years of age are free. There is also an a la carte menu. Entertainment for kids includes Little Chef Cooking, Little da Vinci Painting and more. There is also a lucky draw and a gift for all Kids’ Club guests. Families that dine at Wu Li Xiang can present their bill at the fitness center to use the gym and indoor swimming pool (costs apply); kids under 11 years old are free with a paid adult. In addition, diners can purchase a Family Membership Card for the fitness center with a 10 percent discount.
Roundabout China’s Grand Re-Opening
On Saturday, September 15, starting at 9.30am, Roundabout China will hold a grand
re-opening at their new location. The store is located just behind Yosemite Villa Compound on Yuyang Xilu, off Anhua Jie in Shunyi District. Find directions in Chinese by calling 137 1805 3814. At the grand re-opening, visitors can take a tour of the new facility, learn about and support the many charities that Roundabout supports, or participate in one of the fun planned activities.
BCIS and a BCIS Grade 3 Student Receive Awards
Beijing City International School recently became the first international school in China to be recognized as an Apple Distinguished School by Apple Inc. Currently, BCIS has an Apple Service Center on campus and uses the 1-to-1 Laptop Apple Education program. The award ceremony on May 18 was followed by a presentation from BCIS Learning Technologies Coordinator Will Percy and an open house, where parents and other community members participated in tech-themed workshops. In other news, Grade 3 student Brenton Zhang was honored for being among the highest-scoring participants of the Scholastic and College Ability Test (SCAT) during the 2011-2012 academic year. The SCAT is an above grade level test that students take to become eligible for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) summer camp.
