Sustainability is one of this decade’s big issues, and on Sunday, September 9, students and staff from the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) convened for a panel discussion called “Remember the Source.” Participating in the panel were members of the Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum, who reminded attendees that the world’s resources are limited and that to make an impact, habits have to change.
Discussion focused on the consumption habits and patterns of young people; changing habits now can have a noticeable impact on the future sustainability of the Earth. Panel members urged everyone to remember the source of all the things they buy, consume, and throw away every day, as everything we buy has both a source and an environmental cost. In addition to these warnings, the panel gave concrete examples of little changes that can make a difference: turning off the water when we brush our teeth; choosing vegetarian items or going meatless a day a week; sharing items with friends instead of buying the same product multiple times; and choosing transportation options like walking, biking, metros, and trains.
