For those of us who identify ourselves as mathematically inept, perhaps a workshop from a Mathemagician would have made our numerical illiteracy disappear. Senior school students at Dulwich College Beijing had the privilege of attending workshops on Monday, December 3, and Tuesday, December 4, with not one but three Mathemagicians from the University of Oxford.
The Mathemagicians also held workshops with Dulwich senior school students and teachers, and older students attended an informal Q&A session to ask the Mathemagicians about Oxford and its mathematics department.
Just who are Mathemagicians? Formally known as Marcus’ Marvellous Mathemagicians, these distinguished arithmetic dynamos are postgraduate mathematics students. Their cause is championed by the distinguished Marcus du Sautoy, who is the Simonyi professor for the public understanding of science at the University of Oxford. He has written a number of books about math, and runs the Mathemagicians program, which sends those integer-fluent whizzes around the world conducting workshops.
