But as parents at The British School of Beijing(BSB) learned last Monday, January 21, showing enthusiasm about helping your child with homework can be crucial to building and maintaining his academic confidence. Mark Orrow-Whiting, the director of curriculum development at Nord Anglia Education, shared this piece of advice, and many others, while hosting a talk about how parents can help their children make progress at school.
Showing enthusiasm for academic work is just as important when it’s a subject for which you think you have little ability, said Orrow-Whiting, and just as important is not putting down your perceived deficiency. A key part of Orrow-Whiting’s talk centered on the concept of intelligence, ability, and learning capacity, none of which are fixed at any stage of development. He emphasized that no two students are the same, and that all students will naturally differ in ability and any given time throughout their education.
