Five international schools converged at the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB) on Thursday, January 10 for the Association of China and Mongolia International Schools (ACAMIS) Orange Division 2013 Basketball Tournament. WAB teams participated along with teams from Dulwich College Shanghai, International School of Tianjin, Nanjing International School, Utaloy International School Guangzhou, and Yew Chung International School of Shanghai Puxi.
The tournament began with a welcoming ceremony hosted by WABX Athletics and Activities Director Martin Halpin, who introduced the teams as they paraded in one by one. Students from Lyn McCone’s grade 5 class and Felicity Flowers’ grade 2 class acted as flag bearers. Each team donned its school colors to be greeted by students and staff at WAB.
Other highlights included a performance by WAB’s grade 9 Bollywood Dancers, who awed the crowd and earned lively applause. And the Chinese basket ball trick squad Suixin er Donghua Shi Lanqiu Biaoyandui, who performed at the opening by juggling spinning balls while simultaneously jumping, turning, or interacting with the crowd. One memorable performer had two basketballs spinning one on top of the other, and another incorporated tai qi into his tricks with the spinning ball. The tournament, which ran through Saturday, January 12, concluded with a closing dinner and awards ceremony.
