If you are staying in town over the winter holidays, you may be searching for things to keep the kids busy. Make sure they beat the winter blahs by staying active. Several groups are offering ways for your kids to do just that.
In the most recent edition of Shunyi Happenings, we wrote about the Dulwich Community Programme (DCP) and its offerings of ice skating, football, basketball, and badminton. Call 6454 9126 or 6454 9019 to check if there are any late registration places remaining, as some programs open a second round of registrations depending on availability of slots.
Read on for a few other options in and around our neighborhood. Here’s to keeping fit and active during the holidays.
Beijing Playhouse
As Beijing Playhouse is currently showing its winter production of the pantomime of the Wizard of Oz, lots of children who have been touched by the magic of theater from their seats in the audience may want to be onstage too.
The premier English-language theater troupe for kids recently put out its last call for their Winter Theater Camp to be held from December 16-28. Venue is the Rego British School along Pinnacle Avenue.
See page 40 of our December issue for more on The Wizard of Oz and getting involved in theater in the capital.
Flips and Kicks Plus
Flips and Kicks Plus, which runs gymnastics and karate classes during the school year at both the British School of Beijing (BSB) and Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), is holding another round of its multi-sport holiday camps. The summer were a big hit with kids and parents alike and the winter installments runs from Dec 16-21 (block 1), and Dec 23-28 (block 2, no class on Dec 25).
Each block features new activities and some old favorites. Come along for wushu, fencing, volleyball, hip hop, football, sword fighting, table tennis, gymnastics, and more. All these sports are taught by highly qualified staff. Campers are divided into age groups (5-7 and 8+), and the camp is also divided into half days and full days, depending on your preference. Details of each camp, as well as information about prices, can be found here.
Buses will be provided (along the following route: BSB Sanlitun, Lido, WAB, BSB Shunyi) in the morning with return buses in the afternoon. There are options for catered lunch. For more information please contact coach Fredrik on 183 1146 2632, or by sending an email to info@flipsandkicksplus.com.
Sports Beijing Winter Holiday Camps
There are – as we’ve come to expect from Sports Beijing – several sports camps to choose from.
First up is the ski/climbing camp, offered in partnership with O’le Sports. There are two five-day sessions featuring rock climbing, skiing, football, badminton, trash bash music, and more. The fourth day of the camp will see the kids taking a day trip to Jundushan Ski Resort. The first session is from December 16-20, while the second from December 30 to January 3. The camps run from 10am-4pm, with an option for bus that picks up from, and return to, Shunyi. Click here for details.
Also on offer this winter is the holiday tennis camp for kids aged 8-18 years old. Lessons are given by coaches from Potter’s Wheel Tennis Academy and take place at the Zhong Jia Hotel in Shunyi. The first sessions runs from December 18-20, from 9am-12noon with the second taking place from January 1-3, also from 9am-12noon. More details on the Sports Beijing website.
Finally, the Christmas basketball camp runs between December 16-20 from 9.15am-12noon. The camp is for children in grades 3-7. Players will be grouped by age and ability and will work though a progressive five-day training program. The program includes fitness and conditioning, individual skill building, and team drills for a better understanding of the game. Daily schedule, information on the coaches, and sign-up can all be found here.
