Last term saw the completion of a number of construction projects at Dulwich College Beijing’s Legend Garden campus. These included a new dome, changing rooms, and a café for the school community and for use during sporting events. Upstairs from the café is Legend Heights Café and Restaurant, which has a separate entrance so it’s open to the whole Beijing community. The restaurant has a light and airy dining space, with high ceilings and plenty of windows letting in natural light. The main décor has been kept simple and fresh. Antiques, jewelry, porcelain, and paintings are on display, all of which can be purchased. I particularly liked one of the paintings in the restrooms.
The Western menu includes salads, soups, sandwiches, pizza, and pasta dishes. My kids wanted something simple to eat, that’s what jet lag and uniform shopping does to you! They enjoyed a ham sandwich (RMB 38), which consisted of a huge fresh seeded roll, encasing several slices of ham, tomato, cucumber, and mayo. It was accompanied by crisp fries and a small garden salad. The tuna salad (RMB 48) had a good mix of leaves and tomatoes, topped with plenty of tuna, and lightly dressed with balsamic and olive oil. The bread roll for the ham sandwich was really tasty, so I purchased a few rolls to take home. You can also pick up pastries, organic vegetables, and eggs.
The Chinese menu features cold and hot dishes, plus rice, noodles, and soups. Cold dishes include bean curd with green onions, braised pig feet, crispy cucumber, and octopus salad. Hot dishes include stir-fried broccoli, dry-fried string beans, sweet and sour ribs, beef fillet with black pepper, and kung-pao chicken. I opted for the sweet and sour pork fillet (RMB 58) and the Legend Heights fried rice (RMB 18). The pork was plentiful and tender, and the sauce full of flavor. The rice was well cooked and went perfectly with the pork dish.
To drink, we enjoyed a very refreshing pear juice and soda, fresh watermelon and soda, and a raspberry juice (RMB 28-40). Soft drinks, milkshakes, and alcoholic beverages are available, plus a range of teas. The menu at Legend Heights is extensive, and I look forward to trying many more of the dishes on offer. In particular, something from their seafood selection, that includes king crab, scallop, lobster, catfish, and shrimp. The restaurant’s Lotus Grill serves up vegetable and potato slices, chicken wings, streaky pork, sausages, lamb chops, and steaks. Order a whole roast lamb (RMB 2,600) or add RMB 400 for home delivery.
There’s a table set up with Play-Doh, crayons, and coloring books. You can get whipped vanilla ice cream cones, with flavored sauce, for RMB 8. The restrooms are clean, western stalls with paper, soap, and towels. The restaurant is no smoking, except in the private dining room.
