Many Beijingers daydream about living in Manhattan. On Wednesday, former Beijinger Hannah Han will advise Chinese parents on turning those fantasies into reality.
Han, a Realtor specializing in Manhattan properties who has helped many a Chinese family find residential property there, will talk Wednesday morning at 10am to interested Beijingers as part of our sister magazine JingKids’ lecture series aimed at Chinese parents.
"I’ll talk about how Chinese people can successfully buy an apartment in Manhattan, share stories about how to select an agent, detail the process, and compare the market in Beijing to Manhattan,” Han said.
Han’s clients are mostly mainland Chinese, many of whom are buying US property specifically for their children. New York City is a big draw for them.
In fact, at a real estate showcase held for mainland buyers earlier this month in Shanghai, a recurring theme was how many investors were parents looking out for their children.
One New York City real estate agent remarked that the vast majority of her clients were mainland Chinese families, many of them sending their child to school in the US, with mom and child living in the property they purchased while dad stays in China doing business.
“Often their children will be going to school in Connecticut or Boston, and they want to put their money in Manhattan because they get a really good rental return," Han said. “It’s a very safe and stable market to put money in,” Han said.
Now a Manhattan-based mother of a 3-year-old, Han grew up in Qingdao and moved to Beijing for high school, living in Shunyi.
After going to university in Ohio, she returned to Beijing and worked in the sales and advertising department of beijingkids’ sister magazine before taking a job with a British real estate firm’s Beijing branch.
“Its was the mid 2000’s and construction was happening everywhere in Beijing — there were a lot of opportunities,” Han recalls of that period.
Now, she says, mainland buyers are looking to buy abroad. Han adjusted her career accordingly and now helps many mainland buyers delve into the Manhattan market.
“There’s a lot that I would like to express to potential buyers here,” Han says of the event that she will speak at Wednesday. “For people that are interested in putting their money outside of China, specifically the US market, I have a lot of personal experience and advice to share with them."

The lecture will be in Mandarin Chinese and the Sheraton will be offering an unlimited Dim Sum lunch at Yue following the lecture for RMB 148 per person.
