On Saturday October 31, a special Halloween event was held at Café Zarah in Gulou, hosted by Kids Planet Hutong daycare. It was right during my son’s nap time, so I left him at home with his dad and came out with my daughter, the bumblebee, for our last (and final) Halloween event.
Café Zarah is an excellent café located on Gulou Dong Dajie. They renovated a couple of years ago and now have a beautiful courtyard eating area, an upstairs hutong room (with the requisite beams and high ceilings) and an outdoor balcony that looks down into the courtyard. Saturday’s lovely warm weather made it possible for kids to be outside in their costumes without coats on and my daughter was especially excited to see “two Elsas!”
Kids Planet Hutong outdid themselves with great decorations and amazing treats including “worms in dirt,” my daughter’s favourite. She enjoyed telling me that the jelly worms and chocolate dirt weren’t real, “so don’t worry mommy!”
They also had balloon-popping games and treat cups, which made my little bumblebee positively buzz with excitement. Mommy never usually lets her have so much candy and this week – Halloween – she has experienced a whole new world of permissive sugar around Mommy. Once a year, right?
Although, half-way home, she told me “Nainai always lets her have lots and lots of candy!” I think it’s probably time to have another chat with my mother-in-law about keeping the white sugar intake to a dull roar – or should I say buzz?
