On a glorious day with clear skies and perfect weather, Dulwich College Beijing celebrated their Founder’s Day, Saturday, May 7. As per tradition, it started with the International Flag Parade that represented forty-four countries, celebrating the diverse Dulwich Community with pride!
The Dulwich campus was abuzz with hundreds of people, partaking in over thirty activities to choose from. The Giant Catapult of Science, Sponging Teachers, face painting, kite flying, a slippery slide, Marshmallow Madness, fencing, Shakespeare Video Booth, bubble fun and bouncy Castle were crowd favorites.
One of the biggest draws of Founders Day was the International Food Festival with over fifteen different countries and regions proudly selling their culinary delights. Organized and staffed entirely by Friends of Dulwich (parent volunteers), the food festival this year represented the UK and Ireland, China, Hong Kong and Macao,
Taiwan, the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, India, Singapore and Malaysia, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Mexico and Bolivia, Belgium, Austria, France, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark!
Founder’s Day is an opportunity to remember their Dulwich Founder Edward Alleyn, an entrepreneur who established Dulwich London in 1619 after a career in the theatre, working alongside William Shakespeare. The Dulwich boys’ rugby team and girls’ Netball team, played teams from Harrow International School Beijing for the Fraser Cup, to honor the Founder of Dulwich College International, Mr. Fraser White.
Throughout the day, over 850 Dulwich students entertained the crowds with junior school choir, strings, brass band, soul band, choral music, vocal performances and more. Towards early evening, six extremely talented Dulwich Idol finalists, performed live on a stage with a giant LED screen and 176 lights! The judges had a tough time picking the winner. In the end, Lauren Heath from Year 8, won the popular vote and was crowned Dulwich Idol 2016!
The global-community feel was on full display, with children running around having a blast. The atmosphere echoed with laughter and chatter, everyone enjoying delicious cuisine from all over the world and enthusiastically cheering performers on stage. It all came to a magnificent close, with the Dulwich Choir singing two classic pieces from Les Misérables, amidst fireworks and confetti that thrilled the audience. All-in-all a beautiful day and a perfect example of how diverse yet cohesive this international community is!
