The Merchant of Venice will be performed at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Theater from September 15 to 18 in Beijing.
“In The Merchant of Venice, written by William Shakespeare between 1596 and 1599, a merchant in 16th century Venice, Italy, must default on a large loan provided by an abused Jewish moneylender.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Merchant_of_Venice) The play is considered as one of the greatest four comedies Shakespeare has written as it contains pathos and farce that are combined with moral complexity and romantic entanglements.
For this autumn’s performance, NCPA invites director Jonathan Munby, composer Jules Maxwell, designer Mike Britton, and stars Jonathan Pryce and Rachel Pickup from Shakespeare’s Globe.
Shakespeare’s Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theater, an Elizabethan playhouse on the south bank of the River Thames which was originally built in 1599. The modern reconstruction was founded by the actor and director Sam Wanamaker and built about 230 meters from the site of the original theater in London, England. Shakespeare’s Globe was opened to the public by HM Queen Elizabeth II with a production of the play Henry V, and it has since become a unique international resource dedicated to the exploration of Shakespeare’s work.
The Merchant of Venice is more suitable for teenagers and adults since it concerns ideas of love, consumption, speculation, conspiracy, and debt that younger children may not be able to understand completely. Teens may discover the fun and cleverness in this play, shown especially at the end, when one of the main characters called Portia saved her lover’s life with a clever little trick and ingenious use of the words in the contract.
