The Beijing International Schools Expo (BISE) offers parents opportunities, not only to find out about the many different educational options open to their children, but also to meet, talk to, and learn from prominent educators. Christine Xu, Co-Principal at Yew Chung International School (YCIS) Beijing, is one of the featured speakers at this year’s BISE.
Xu has been at YCIS Beijing for nearly two decades. She got her start as a teacher before rising through the ranks to become one of two co-principals, becoming a part of the school’s leadership structure which in itself stands as an example of YCIS’s unique bilingual co-teaching model. Her own journey of growth and development might be one of the reasons she’s chosen to speak about learning journeys, and specifically Parenting a Learning Journey with Children.
The phrase “learning journey” can have different meanings in different contexts, so we asked Xu what it means to her.
“Many studies have shown that the role of parents have a significant influence on their children’s growth,” she told us. “There is an increasing consensus that understanding children, understanding education, and growing children through parenting are directly linked.”
We asked how her experience as an educator had informed her views on parenting.
“20 years of experience in international education and 8 years as the Co-Principal of YCIS Beijing has given me a great deal of insight into the needs of not just our parents but parents in general,” she said. “I have hosted many education and parenting workshops and forums to assist parents with a variety of issues.”
How does YCIS Beijing put these principles into practice?
“Parents are one of the most strategic partners for our school and are an active part of our school community,” she told us. “We offer a wide variety of information sessions, workshops, parenting sessions, and educational forums to parents from the greater expat community.”
Finally, we asked who would be likely to benefit from her talk.
“My talk is perfect for parents, teachers, and those interested in family education and international education,” she said.
