As the weather is gradually getting warmer and warmer, why not get active by hiking this spring? This weekend, China Culture Center will head onto the northern outskirts of Beijing’s Changping District for a hike to the Silver Mountain.
The attraction got its name due to the view when the mountain is covered by snow during the winter. The mountainside area is made up of black granite and is home to Buddhist pagodas called stupas. It is one of the ancient Buddhist shrines in North China, and some of the stupas survived more than 7 centuries, with the oldest ones dating back to the Jin dynasty. This site has also been home to a community of monks and nuns.
To date, 18 stupas remain standing in the area, hence it’s also called the Pagoda Forest. Not only does the area boast these beautiful pagodas, the mountainside is dotted with pines, cypresses, and other evergreens, making this the perfect trip for those looking for activities combining both natural and historical sights.
On the way to the Silver Mountain is Haizi village, a quiet area with views of the mountainside and the forest. This is the perfect spot for walking or hiking.
The drive to the area lasts 2 hours, while the village trip and hike will take about four hours max. As with other hikes, bringing your own packed lunch, snacks, and water is a wise idea. Also, don’t forget to bring a jacket, gloves and long pants, just to make sure you’re warm if temperatures start to drop.
