Plenty of new news and events this week, as well as gentle reminders of things just around the corner (see details in previous Shunyi Happenings posts for more information). In between, take advantage of this beautiful spring weather and get outside!
*Steak & Eggs is finally opening! Set inside the River Garden clubhouse, this restaurant has been under renovation for a couple of months. Villa Deputy General Manager Zina Janik says that the restaurant is scheduled to open on April 17, and regular operating hours will be 7am-10pm serving breakfast, lunch and dinner.
*Roundabout’s book sale will be at Dulwich River Garden campus this Saturday, April 16 from 10am-3pm. Come support everyone’s favorite charity distribution store! All money raised will be used to pay for heart surgery costs for Sun Xiao Yu (Eric), a one-year-old boy under the care of New Hope Foster Home.
*Felix Photography Studio is looking for families/kids for modeling to help launch and promote his new studio. Families will enjoy a free photo session, all negatives as a gift, and a VIP discount. Models are needed between April 9 and May 30 – for more information e-mail felixphotographystudio@yahoo.com or call 8470 1058.
*Two great events coming up soon at Dulwich Early Years River Garden campus – on Friday, April 15 come for “Story Time for Young Children” from 9-9:30am. Copies of the books Dear Zoo will be available for sale. Then on Saturday, April 23, sign up for the ayi workshop, “How to Play Meaningfully and Safely with Children” from 9:30-11am. *Ease your way into learning Chinese with a unique and fun course offered Anny Chuan. A California public schools-certified Mandarin Chinese teacher, Anny offers small group classes in her River Garden home. The spring session will begin at the end of April. For a look at the syllabus and other information, contact Anny at anny.chuan@gmail.com. She also has opportunities for intermediate and advanced students.
*The Shunyi INN Neighborhood Coffee Morning will meet at Mrs. Shanen’s on Thursday, April 21 from 10am-noon. This is a great opportunity to connect with people in your neighborhood, newcomers and veterans alike!
*Wow! Check out www.bsbsummerfun.com – the website for the British School Beijing’s summer programs! There are SO many activities for kids of all ages, and plenty of date options for those traveling during some of the summer. No need to say more, look at the website yourself and see what interests you!
*If you’re not booked for an Easter brunch, don’t forget the BookMark Library’s special event, the Young Writers Program, held on Sunday, April 24 from 1-4pm inside the Piazza Cafe! Open to students of all ages, this is a celebration of language and literature (not a competition). Any writing is welcome. Provide your child’s name, gender, age and type of writing to either Deborah (139 1003 1879) or Amanda (136 0105 4566).
*Help Shunyi Orphanage with a ladies night out! On Wednesday, April 20 at 8pm at the Scarlet Wine Bar & Restaurant in Chaoyang District, come to a fun swishing event. Bring 1-3 quality clothing items or accessories to the event for a swap. You may browse your possible new acquisitions before the event, which begins promptly at 9:30pm. A suggested RMB 50 donation at the door provides you with one complimentary drink – and RMB 13 of selected drinks for RMB 38 will be donated to the orphanage as well. For event questions, e-mail mrs_zima@yahoo.com. The orphanage houses about 55 children from infants to 17 years old, and they desperately need funding for new diapers. It’s a basic health and safety issue, and the orphanage needs about RMB 5,000 per month to keep the babies in clean diapers.
*Help your ayi speak better English at HLCC Learning Center in Capital Paradise. Ayi’s group classes are held on Thursdays and Fridays from 1:20-3:20pm. E-mail halide@hlcc.asia for more information.
*Secrets of Africa is, indeed, open for business in its new location between the WAB elementary and high schools (in the same strip mall area of QiQi Pets, Domino’s Pizza and Euro Bakery). Hours are 7:30am-7pm, and there’s an extended menu and free WiFi.
*New Bollywood dance classes start this week! Come to the River Garden clubhouse on Tuesdays OR Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm for this fun workout. Contact Irit at iritmike@gmail.com for more information.

*And a reminder – but not at River Garden – don’t forget about the functional circuit classes held at the Human in Motion studio in Riviera Plaza (across from WAB). Come on Tuesdays or Thursdays at 11am for a full body conditioning class that is designed to enhance the way the human body functions. Five one-hour sessions cost RMB 750. E-mail humaninmotion@yahoo.com to register.
*Saw that Hair Show, a popular hair/nail salon and massage center is moving, but not too far away! Apparently, on April 17 it will move to the second floor just next door to its current location. Not sure of the reason for this, but I’m sure we’ll see/hear more in the next week or so.
