A miniature beach paradise awaits you … in the middle of downtown Beijing
In addition to a Saturday and Sunday packed with events (see our weekend picks in our newsletter here), there’s Monday to think about — the Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional holiday that’s only been recently added to the ranks of days off of work and school.
For those expecting Beijing’s waterways to be chock-a-block with colorful racing boats, I have some bad news for you — dragon boat racing is much more of a southern Chinese thing, and while cities around the country host fancy races that attract people from all over, Beijing has yet to put together a spectator-worthy spectacle.
That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do Monday — in fact, there is … just check out Events section for some suggestions of organized events, or make your own fun — there’s plenty to do. Here’s but three suggestions for you:
1. Head out to Gaobeidian where Lily’s Antiques is holding a Dragon Boat Festival Street Fair with tons of arts and crafts workshops for kids … and best of all, they’ll have the street blocked off so that cars won’t be a problem.
2. Teens will probably want to check out Day 2 of the Kama Love Music Festival — probably the mellowest of Beijing’s myriad music fests — which concludes Monday and features local and international acts such as the Cowboy Junkies, The Eels and Taiwan’s rock crooner Wu Bai.
3. Children (and adults) of all ages will love the Tuanjiehu Water Park (pictured above), which opened for the season this week, as our alert forum user Waitaitai helpfully points out. Read her tips and tricks for having a great day there on this thread.
