A first-class education at an affordable price awaits your child
It’s not often in this city of skyrocketing costs that you come across some good news about the rising cost of education.
In a merciful recognition that not everyone is here on the proverbial "expat package" (and therefore have their children’s tuition taken care of by their employer) the House of Knowledge Kindergarten has initiated a scholarship program for students that is entirely need-based.
With locations in Shunyi and Chaoyang Park, HOK offers a multilingual (English, Chinese and German) learning environment for children 12 months to 6 years old.
Details of the scholarship program can be found on HOK’s website here and are excerpted below; to request an application, please click here.
Can I use the HoK Kindergarten Scholarship at any school?
No. We deeply believe in the short and long term value of a solid preschool and kindergarten education, and know that there are many excellent schools able to provide this in Beijing. Unfortunately, our resources are very limited and this scholarship program is privately funded; it is not a state or company supported voucher or school choice program. Due to these reasons, the HoK Kindergarten Scholarships only apply to our kindergarten programs.
The scholarships are need-based and so the number of scholarships depends on the amount of need demonstrated by applicants. We will strive to aid as many families as possible, up to a limit of ten scholarships being offered for the 2011/12 school year.
We believe that children are all equally deserving and that they all have unlimited promise. With this in mind, our scholarships will not be awarded on student merit or promise, as is so often the case with other financial aid programs. The HoK Kindergarten Scholarships will predominantly be awarded based on financial need and go to families who could otherwise not afford to provide their child with a first-class education.
No. In order to have the maximum benefit for the most children, these scholarships will significantly reduce the cost of kindergarten, but they will not eliminate tuition expenses.
Yes. We thought about this long and hard, but concluded that a child that joins our program, because of this scholarship, will open a seat for another child somewhere else. This is a positive outcome no matter how we look at it.
Can I use the scholarship to move my child from a half-day program to HoK’s full-day program?
Yes. We firmly believe the large body of evidence showing the great benefits of full-day kindergarten, and are happy to be able to support such a transition.
If my company provides an allowance for my child’s education, can I use this in conjunction with an HoK scholarship to help pay for their school tuition?
Absolutely. Our scholarships are designed to get you closer to being able to afford a premier education for your child, but due to limited resources, we are unable to offer full scholarships that cover the total cost of a child’s tuition. If you have the benefit of another party willing and able to help you the rest of the way, we are happy to work together to help you achieve the dream of giving your child an outstanding education.
It is an academic scholarship only. However, receiving a scholarship will have the effect of lowering your overall expenses, therefore offsetting the expense of an after school program or long day care of your choice. HoK offers several after school activities throughout the week, as well as an after school day care program that runs for your convenience from the end of the kindergarten day until 6:00pm.
We will accept scholarship applications until we have exhausted our scholarship funding and filled all available student spaces. For this reason, parents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible and are welcome to call if they are concerned all scholarships have already been granted. We will tell you on the phone.
The program executive director will inform you of any scholarship awarded within two weeks of receiving your application.
