As a Beijing “downtowner,” I don’t tend to stray too far beyond Sanlitun and CBD. Even Gulou area is a stretch. So when the opportunity arose to try Mrs. Shanen’s, I took it.
Inside, they stock freshly baked bagels decorated with sesame seeds and pita breads sat, in addition to a display of delectable goodies. On offer are fresh herbs (dill, rosemary, sage) for RMB 10, sage and rosemary sea salt (RMB 45), Green Cow organic eggs (chicken RMB 5, goose RMB 10), chocolate chip cookies, linzerhearts and the ultimate in cuteness: mini gingerbread men (RMB 10). The restaurant also has organic peanut butter and tubs of tahini, dark and light roast (RMB 35).
After admiring the baked goods on display and dissecting their check-list menu, I opted for a veggie melt, a lemonade ice tea (RMB 35) and a chocolate chip cookie. All of them were scrumptious and had me wanting more. I left with a full tummy and a slightly lighter wallet.
Shunyi, you might be far from my home, but you can be sure I’ll be back for Mrs. Shanen’s.
If you haven’t been yet, check it out: Mrs. Shanen’s.
