October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time when we’re all encouraged to get ourselves checked out as well as show our support for the cause in various ways. For 25 years, this month-long campaign has grown to incorporate thousands of sponsors, millions of advocates, and increased funding that continues to search for treatments and cures.
Do you know someone who has been affected by breast cancer? Is there family history that you need to be aware of? Are you getting the recommended mammogram screening to ensure optimum health?
First, become educated. You don’t have to go to seminars or read books to get the information you need. Many websites are available to teach you about breast cancer, whether you’re experiencing it personally or just have questions. Start with www.nationalbreastcancer.org, www.nbcam.org, or www.pinkribbon.com for some basic information. Locally, turn to Beijing United Family Hospital for information. Several online support groups are available to explore, including breastcancer2-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
If you shop online, you’ll see many special promotions this month. Cuisinart has a line of pink kitchen products available, and Conair has hair care merchandise – when you make a purchase, a portion of the proceeds goes to cancer research. Hipstamatic, an iPhone camera app, even has a lens and case special for 99 cents. If you want to make a difference in the simplest way, type in “breast cancer” during your online shopping to see the amazing amount of options you have. Still stuck? Go to www.thebreastcancersite.com for an abundance of pink products.
Here in Beijing, there are a couple of events highlighting the awareness aspect in a positive, upbeat way. The Peninsula Beijing has a “Peninsula in Pink” campaign during the month with many pink promotions to help support charities. Teaming up with the China Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, there’s a month-long afternoon (pink) tea and cocktail event in the lobby; pink ribbon pins available for donation, and a special Pink Ceremony package offered by the Peninsula Spa. There’s even a Pink Suite Package available for a two-night stay. See all of the promotions by clicking here.
In Shunyi, Clicia’s Designs and Shayne’s Treasures will host a Breast Cancer Fundraiser on Thursday, October 27 from 10am-5pm. Pink gemstones, pink pearls, pink beads and more will be 25% off, and a single pink rose — possibly containing a prize — will be given for any sale or breast cancer donation of RMB 200 or more. They are located at Lake View Place in the Dragon Bay Villa area 顺义区顺安南路 邮政编码 (8042 2203).
If you know of other events, please share them here in the comments section, and remember to wear pink this month to show your support!
