With Thanksgiving just around the corner and bazaar season upon us, check out all of the events and opportunities going on in our neighborhood.
*The November INN meeting will be this Thursday the 17th from 10am-noon at Mrs. Shanen’s Bagels & Café. Come find out what neighbors know about our Shunyi area – all are welcome!
*Don’t forget the Roundabout Book Fair, on Saturday, November 19 from 10am-3pm at the British Rego School. Hugely successful in the past, this now serves at the only fundraiser for Roundabout until they find another retail location. Pick up some great gifts and great reads, while supporting Roundabout Charities at the same time.
*River Garden’s annual Christmas Bazaar is also this Saturday (November 19) at the villa clubhouse from 10am-4pm. With over 35 vendors – many new this year, all table fees will go to charity.
*On Sunday at Pinotage Restaurant & Wine Bar (Lane Bridge Villas clubhouse), come to a special event supporting the Surmang Foundation, with fine food and a live auction of Tibetan artwork, cases of wine and more. Surmang Foundation works to reduce the mortality rates of women and children in rural Chinese areas with their health clinics in Qinghai, and treats patients for free (read about this group on www.surmang.org). This event, from 6-9pm, costs RMB 800 per person, and an RSVP is required by e-mail leeweingrad@surmang.org or phone 6457 7028.
*Lots of talk lately about being safe in our neighborhood these days. Perfect timing, then for some self-defense classes made for women and children at Rose & Ginko villas. Classes are held on Mondays at the clubhouse, and began this past Monday. Trainer Alan Tong has more than 25 years of experience in teaching self-defense and martial arts (check his website at www.AlanTong.com). Kindergarten kids (ages 4-5) are from 3:30-4:30pm; girls and women (beginning at age 6) are from 5-6pm, with classes likely being split into different age groups (adolescents, ages 13+) after the class sizes are determined. Cost is RMB 120 per session. Contact Alan at APGsport@yahoo.com or 187 1012 9744 for more information. Training includes developing self-awareness, being aware of your surroundings, and learning ready-to-use handy tricks. Role play and escape actions will be taught in older classes.
*Care for Children Family Services Clinic (River Garden location) has moderated an Adult Support Group on Tuesday evenings this month that you may be interested in checking out. From 5-6:30pm, various issues ranging from problems at home to anxiety and depression will be discussed amongst the group. Free child care is available during the meetings, too! Contact admin@careforchildrenservices.com.cn or call Jenni at 8046 3306 to reserve your space. The next meeting is November 22.
*Also at Care for Children coming up on Friday, November 25 will be a Parent Morning: “Dyslexia Do’s and Don’ts” by Isela Shipton from 10:30am-noon. Learn how to provide necessary tools and strategies to support dyslexic individuals during this event, sponsored by Secrets From Africa. Contact the info above for details.
*Thanksgiving is just next week! You’ve seen many options for dining in or dining out, and Boulangerie Nanda, on Jingshun Lu just past the Beidong Flower Market, has fancy desserts for you to round out your meal, as well as bread crumbs for your stuffing. From Dixie Pecan Bourbon Pie to a Pumpkin Banana Mousse Tart, call 139 1127 2032 or e-mail hsiangyin.yeh@gmail.com at least two days in advance to order.
*There’s a new restaurant in Pinnacle Plaza, located directly behind Hair Show, called Black Milk Restaurant. Take-out menus were in a basket outside by their specials board, and it appears this place is aimed for the meat lovers. From Spanish Crispy Suckling Pig, to Angus T-Bone, to Black Milk Lamb Chop, there are over a dozen hefty entrees, as well as soup, salad, pasta, burgers and pizza.
*There is also a new medical reflexology office, right next to Jenny Wang in Pinnacle. I’ve heard a lot about the benefits of reflexology regarding stress, and even issues that arise due to colder temperatures outside. It might be worth a look-see.
*I rode to get my biked tuned up at Trek…only to find that it’s no longer there. Gone forever? Moved? If anyone knows, please post it below. Have a great week!
