After hours of rehearsals, costume changes, make-up, and light and sound checks, the elaborate stage at Tianqiao Theater was set for the promotional kick-off of The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate, a new USD 35 Million, 3D IMAX epic story from acclaimed director Tsui Hark. The auditorium was packed with screaming fans there to catch a glimpse of the film’s star cast. Although the director and the lead actor, Jet Li, were well known to the fans, the real heart palpitating screams were saved for the younger members of the cast: Zhou Xun, Chen Kun, Li Yuchun, Kwai Lun-mei, Louis Fan, Mavis Fan (Taiwanese singing sensation), and acting newcomer Wu Di (former wushu world champion).
The night included discussions with the cast about the challenges of filming a historical action-packed drama for 3D. The fans went crazy (particularly the young women) when each actor tossed out a signed piece of movie paraphernalia into the audience – at times starting skirmishes that in the end were all settled amicably. The event finished with martial arts performances by three of the films actors, including Wu Di, which gave the fans a live taste of the action sequences to come next month when the film is officially released on 16 December in China. If the production quality of the promotion at Tianqiao Theater was anything to judge the film by, Flying Swords should be quite entertaining.
