New design plans to extend Beijing into the Bohai region to form a new green city, the Beijing Bohai Innovation City development, have recently been unveiled. After the government held an international design competition, the winning entry was from Chicago based architecture firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM). The expansion of the city of Beijing “will bring 17.6 million square meters (around 57 million square feet) of mixed-use development into play.”
The city will consist of a central business district, around a high speed train station, and five neighborhoods, which will combine housing, education and shopping locations. The green city will incorporate a high speed rail network and will rely considerably on metro links, fast bus connections, and an electric car fleet, all with the aim of making it possible “for 80 percent of the city’s personal transportation to be made via public transit, walking and bicycling.” And we won’t have to wait too long for this eco-friendly city, as plans are already being put into action.
