A recent survey taken by Likeji, a professor at the School of Public Health at Peking University of 218 parents in Beijing regarding the use of calcium supplements in children has revealed that “70 percent of babies under 4 months old and 90 percent of those older than six months were being fed calcium supplements” and this unnecessary use of calcium supplements could actually be causing the children harm. This high statistic is thought to be due to the predominant role that rickets once played in children in China, which has now resulted in worried parents overusing calcium supplements despite the fact that a recent survey taken from 1990-1996 showed that the percentage of rickets among of Chinese children had dropped to 26.7% (compared with the 40.7% concluded from a national survey taken between 1977-1983). This overuse of calcium supplements in children could result in health problems such as kidney stones and various other problems.
