In a bid to attract more international students, some Chinese universities have started to offer courses taught in English. Nankai University, one of China’s best universities announced recently that it is due to start offering some of its most popular courses in English language next semester in the hope that this will persuade more international students to study there. The courses being offered include Chinese society, culture and politics.
Last year, Beijing’s University of International Business and Economics held 10 job fairs for the universities’ international students, and recently set up a Foreign Students Career Advisory Center. Li Yong, head of the university’s Foreign Students Career Advisory Center commented “we are trying our best to attract more international students as a source of revenue for the university and to enhance our university’s international reputation”. Li also added that the universities’ 2,900 international students bring more than 40 million yuan to the university every year. And it appears that Chinese universities aim to increase these numbers of international students over the next few years.
