Yesterday, as part of the ongoing public seminars at OASIS Healthcare to promote health awareness, Dr. David Lee (an American dentist and ADA member) gave a stirring 90-minute talk on all things dental to an audience of parents, hospital staff, and visiting dental practitioners.
Besides highlighting the benefits of customized oral hygiene and regular check-ups for patients, Dr. Lee spoke at length about his crusade to raise the standard of dental care in China.
A central piece of that effort is teaching parents and children how to properly brush and care for their own teeth. To that end, Dr. Lee highlighted the Oral Hygiene Instruction Room in his dental clinic where the staff demonstrates to patients how to properly brush, floss, and care for their teeth. Dr. Lee beamed with pride while describing how the service works – two weeks after the children are taught how to brush their teeth, they are allowed to return and see if they can pass the dental clinic’s brushing exam. This is a free service that OASIS is offering to the community.
Dr. Lee also described many of the challenges facing the Chinese and foreign community when it comes to oral hygiene. In his effort to raise the standard across China, Dr. Lee has given seminars throughout the country, trained professors, dentists, and nurses, volunteered his time at clinics, and spoken to just about anyone willing to listen and learn. It is a huge endeavor, but one that he clearly is passionate about. He explained that it is his fervent wish to educate the community so well that he would work himself out of his job.
