After a summer crunching numbers in the US and Guangzhou, International School of Beijing (ISB) student Courtney Guo won the silver medal at this summer’s Chinese Girls Math Olympiad (CGMO). The GCMO wasn’t Guo’s only chance to exert her mathematic prowess this summer; at the end of last school year she was invited to the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) at the University of Lincoln-Nebraska.
The CGMO is an international girls-only math competition. The two-day test, which was administered on August 10 and 11 this summer in Guangzhou, features four proof-based math problems that the girls must solve within four hours. Guo was part of the US team, which achieved outstanding results on the exam, with a team total of eight medals: three gold, four silver, and one bronze.
The CGMO came hot on the heels of Guo’s stint at the MOSP in Nebraska. Guo was one of 56 of the 210,000 applicants for the MOSP,which was held from June 5-29. In order to qualify, Guo completed a total of 12 hours of testing: three hours for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination and 9 hours for the United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad (USAJMO). Due to the time change, Guo had to complete the two nights of testing between the hours of 12.30am and 5am, and scored in the top 14 of 240 USAJMO participants.
Guo’s goal for next year is to qualify for the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, which she missed this year by the hair’s breadth of half a point.
