For four primary students at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS), the summer holiday was about making a difference. Erika Miller (year 5C), Coco Yu (year 6A), and Sarah and Sofia Epstein (years 6A and 5C, respectively), took the end of their holiday to go door to door in their apartment complex collecting donations for Seeds of Hope, a charity initiative launched by YCIS following the Sichuan earthquake. With hand-made signs, information about the initiative, and a lot of verve, the girls raised a substantial amount of money to help build a school in Heibei province.
The school, which will be built in Wanan, Hebei, is the second Seeds of Hope school. The first was built in Qufu, Shandong province, which now has 500 students from six villages. Miller, Yu, and the Epsteins were flipping through the 2012 yearbook when they remembered the project and felt their motivation rekindled. After making posters and visiting their neighborhood, they raised RMB 2,270, which they brought to the YCIS front office to be added to donations. The girls meticulously recorded each donor, so they were able to give each one with an official letter of thanks from YCIS.
