Katie Benson is a full-time mom from Texas, US. For the last eight years, she has lived in Shunyi’s River Garden with her husband Andy and their two daughters: Madeline (age 11) and Ella (5). Benson’s only request for the makeover was “no bangs”; otherwise, TATA Creative Director Martin Harper had free rein to do whatever he wanted. As a mom on-the-go, it was imperative that Benson’s haircut fit her lifestyle – not the other way around. She needed a low-maintenance cut with flexible styling options. After Ella was born, Benson’s hair started to fall out in clumps and grew back much finer. To add bounce and volume, Harper shaped her hair into a dramatic graduated bob. “Short actually works better for [Katie], because light and thin hair tends to snap off when it gets long,” he says. The end results were eye-opening, if we do say so ourselves.

After shampooing, Harper blowdried Benson’s hair to see it in its natural state. He snipped a few inches off the overall length, then angled the scissors at 45° to add
layers in the back. He left longer pieces in the front for an asymmetrical feel.

Following the initial cut, Harper sprayed Benson’s hair with ionized water to combat static. He blowdried her hair again and softened the graduated bob by trimming the back of her hair some more. Harper finished off by spraying Benson’s hair with WELLA Ocean Spritz Beach Texture sea salt spray (available for RMB 350 at TATA).

Makeup artist Dalong started off by prepping Benson’s skin with Eau Thermale by Avène and Dr. Magic Rose Whitening Moisturizing Cream. He used Covermark Basic Formula SPF 33 as a concealer and Armani Luminous Skin Foundation #5 for the base. He then used a combination of MAC Matte eyeshadow in Wedge and Charcoal Brown, and Lunasol’s Beige Beige 01 quad compact for her eyes. For the eyebrows, Dalong used a brow powder called Kanebo KATE Designing Eyebrow N for shaping and a brow gel called Anastasia Beverly Hills in Granite for control. To finish off, he applied a coat of Benefit They’re Real mascara to Benson’s eyelashes and Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited lipstick for the perfect pout.
