The biggest, yellowest character from the beloved American children’s television show Sesame Street traveled out of his neighborhood to Baijiazhuang Elementary School on Wednesday, December 5. Yes, Big Bird himself appeared alongside former US Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, Sesame Street Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Sherrie Westin, and Director at the Paulson Institute Deborah M. Lehr, for the launch of an initiative to teach kids how to conserve water.
A cooperation of the Paulson Institute, the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE), The Nature Conservancy, Thirst and the China Association of Mayors (CAM), the initiative aims to educate children about water usage and conservation. As Beijing is currently experiencing a severe water shortage, creating a sustainable and efficient water use habits is one of the city’s most important development projects. At the school, Paulson stated that we need to realize that water doesn’t just come from a faucet, but is a limited resource and that our habits must change.
