Renata Carvalho is originally from Bahia, Brazil. She has two kids: Daniel (age 5), who attends the British School of Beijing, and Rodrigo (age 2), a student at The Children’s House International Montessori Kindergarten. When she arrived at Hair & Beauty by Hummingbird, Carvalho had natural long, dark hair that hadn’t been cut in nine months, with very thin ends from excessive layering. She was initially nervous about trying color, but settled on chocolate “lowlights” rather than highlights with Salon Director Christian Ravaglioli and Creative Art Director Tom Yuen. Because Carvalho didn’t want to sacrifice too much length, Ravaglioli and Yuen played with volume and texture for a glamorous look that brought to mind roaring samba and hot summer nights.

After combing out Carvalho’s hair, Ravaglioli trimmed her split ends and took 4-5 inches off the length. He then blow dried her hair into large, soft curls.
Yuen combined the colors 4-5 and 5-5 from Schwarzkopft Professional’s line to create broad, chocolate brown lowlights for Carvalho.
First, Yuen shaped Carvalho’s eyebrows and used Shu Uemura Hard 9 brow pencil for balance and definition. He then brushed a Chanel concealer around her eyes and nose, mixing it with Joseristine Replumping with Marine Matrix Serum to reduce cakiness. He used Jun & Peace Perfect Combination 02 loose powder to reduce shine. Then, he created a classic smoky eye with Two Faced’s Smoky Eye Kit. Yuen further defined Carvalho’s eyes with Face It Extreme Brush Pen Eyeliner on her top lids, then capped off the look with Max Factor False Lash Effect mascara. Finally, he added color with Make Up Forever’s 5-Lipstick Color Palette and Bobbi Brown’s 4-Color Blush Set.
