Raising awareness for hunger and unequal food distribution, but few of us know what it’s like to be hungry. Students at Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS) decided to remedy this and face the challenge of a 24-hour famine on Friday, March 15. Jun-Ting Yeung, Peyton Cheong, Alessandro Laspina, Huang Yun Lee, and Danny Chan encouraged 23 Year 12 students to give up food for 24 entire hours, and themselves experience what millions of children around the world face on a routine basis. By giving up food for a day, students raised over RMB 5,000, but how did they function an entire school day without food?
Many students braced themselves before the famine officially began, eating their last meal of the day. From there, students filled their bellies with water and distracted themselves with card games and board games. Many of the participants expressed surprise that they weren’t feeling more negative effects of their lack of food. They prevailed, however, as the famine ended and the students raised their money, which will fund a microloan program through World Vision.
The organizers are keen to set an even more ambitious goal for next year’s famine.
