Universal Pictures has confirmed that their summer animated film ‘Despicable Me 2’ will not be released in China according to the Los Angeles times. It is not clear why the State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) denied the film to be screened.
Since its release the animated film has grossed nearly USD 590 worldwide with USD 308 coming from the international market. The film is a sequel to the 2010 hit starring Steve Carroll who voices Gru, a reformed baddie who teams up with his minions to save the world from a super-villain named El Macho. It has received favorable criticism in rotten tomatoes with an 87 percent rating from the top critics and a 75 percent rating from all critics.
China is the second largest film market in the world with a growth of more than 35 percent through the first half of 2013 but revenue from imported films has shrunk by 21.3 percent, according to data by SARFT.
