It’s always the people that make a place. So we believe that we should get to know the people who make Shunyi, the players who give us service and those who make our stay here not just bearable, but also more enjoyable.
In this extra edition of Shunyi Happenings, we introduce you to some newcomers in our corner of Beijing. Perhaps one day you will get to meet them in person, whether at their place of work or socially.
Also, we share with you some recommendations and information given by friends around Shunyi. In this little community that we live in, sometimes word-of-mouth is the best way to learn about great places. Go check them out, see how you like them, and then feel free to send us your own favorites (bullhorn optional.)
Welcomes
Ms. Laura Rico joins Positive Foundations Preschool as the nursery lead teacher. Along with the rest of the Positive Foundations teaching staff, Ms. Rico is ready to welcome students at the school’s new location. You can still find Positive Foundations at Gahood Villas but, after moving during the October holiday, it is now at a bigger venue at number 2099, right next to the playground. This space is better suited for the growing international kindergarten.
The Learning Center, also in Gahood Villas, is pleased to welcome back its elementary and middle school language arts teacher Joanne Harris-Bedford (pictured above). Joanne qualified in Ontario, Canada in primary/junior, intermediate and special needs education. At various points in her educational career, Joanne has run a successful tutoring business, taught at elementary and middle school levels, and developed and implemented innovative lesson plan strategies for second language speakers.

Thanks to Caroline for the information that hypermarket Wu Mart (WuMei) has just opened a Shunyi branch. Found just a few hundred meters off of the Luoma Roundabout, it affords us Shunyi residents a lot of convenience to have a big chain store located much closer to home. Now even you can get to a Wu Mart on your no-drive days. If coming down Tian Bei Lu and with Europlaza to your left, keep driving down until you reach the big Luoma Roundabout. Take the first exit to the right and you’ll find it right next to a Super 8 Hotel and a small McDonald’s on that main Houshayu Road.
Mary Kate, of Tai Tai Tennis and Tai Tai Shop, is always a great resource for new and interesting things in Shunyi. She has kindly shared a new find: Panini Restaurant in Pinnacle Plaza near Baskin and Robbins. Although we have yet to try it ourselves, Mary Kate enjoys the delicious food and gives us the tip that there is a fun kid-friendly menu to be tried at Panini. Call 187 1014 2136 for inquiries.
Clicia, who co-owns Clicia’s Gems and Shayne’s Treasures at Dragon Bay, informs us that the roast chicken available at the Epicurean Deli next door to her jewelry shop is quite tasty and makes a good treat for the whole family. My boys are big fans of this and one time our dog actually took an entire chicken and polished off the meat in five minutes flat when we weren’t looking. If he could speak I’m sure he would say how tender the meat was. They only roast a few chickens a day so be sure to place your order in advance to avoid disappointment.
Antoinette tells us that Little Italy has just moved to the restaurant strip in Dragon Bay (Long Wan) 7th Street. Get your pasta and pizza fix here. If it’s burritos and fajitas you’re after, then head to Mexican Kitchen which has also just found a new home in the turn-off for the Golf Academy behind Jenny Wang’s Pinnacle Plaza. Both restaurants, owned by the same company, can be reached on 5716 4848 or 5716 7488. Opening hours for both are 11.30am-10pm.
