Halloween in Shunyi
Halloween is ‘round the corner and those who are big on celebrating are looking forward to the parties and trick-or-treating. Here are the details for this year’s two biggest compound parties.
Sat Oct 26, 4-10pm
This is the biggest Halloween event in Shunyi and always a favorite. The entire compound is closed to vehicles to keep the roads safe for trick-or-treaters. The clubhouse is transformed into a haunted house. From 4.30-5.30pm, younger children up to age 6 are welcome. Then older kids get a spookier version from 6.30-8.30pm.
You need to be invited by residents and pay a RMB 10/person fee for entrance to the haunted house. Contact your friends who live in River Garden if you would like to partake of this block party. A full schedule will be released during the week of the event.
Thu Oct 31, 5-9pm
Parade and trick-or-treating around the village will take place from 5-6.30pm. There will be a buffet dinner from 6-9pm and the ticket includes free-flow soft drinks and beer. The movie will be screened at 6.30pm
Tickets cost RMB 188/adult; RMB 94/child (aged 4-12) Deadline for registration is Oct 30, as there is a maximum of 200 persons for this party.

Sat Oct 26, 2-4pm
Further out of town, the fifth annual Halloween jack-o-lantern carving contest takes place at the Schoolhouse in Mutianyu. After selecting, decorating and carving it, your creation will be displayed and lit up as jack-o-lanterns for the evening’s fine dining and judged by the Schoolhouse team.
Winners will be selected in three categories: children aged up to 12, Teenagers up to 17, and adults. Prizes include birthday party, sleepover and weekend getaway packages respectively.
Any guest who wears a Halloween costume while dining from 11am-6pm will receive a free dessert from the à la carte menu. Any adult guest who wears a Halloween costume while enjoying Saturday Fine Dining from 6-9pm will receive a free bottle of house red wine or equivalent credit toward another wine selection to be served with dinner.
Family Art Events with MAC Time Community Art Center
Join MAC Time Community Art Center’s family art events and learn about modern art and photography the fun way!
MAC Time is organizing a tour to the Andy Warhol: 15 Minutes Eternal exhibit at the CAFA Art Museum. Together with a group of like-minded art lovers, tour this very colorful exhibit of pop art’s most famous icon. Then get a chance to make your own Warhol-style prints.
Children aged 6 and above, accompanied by one parent, are welcome. Cost is RMB 220 per child.
The tour takes place on Saturday October 26, from 10am-12noon.
On Saturday November 16, another tour will be offered, this time to the White Nights Photo Studio at the Miao Pu Art Zone in Chaoyang. See and learn about old photographs and then get a chance to take your own photo the analog way, something a lot of today’s children may never have experienced.
Children aged 6 and above, accompanied by one parent, are welcome. Cost is RMB300 per child.

Parenting Courses
The highly sought-after parenting course, Parenting Effectiveness Training, is again being offered in Shunyi. This time, Beijing International Bilingual Academy (BIBA) in Houshayu plays host to eight weeks of learning which covers effective communication strategies to help you and your children better relate to one another and enjoy each other more.

Avocado Tree now serves up Mexican food on the second floor of the Jenny Lou building in Beijing Riviera. After enjoying a loyal following at Pinnacle Plaza for several years, this branch brings Tex-Mex dining to this side of Chaoyang/Shunyi. Pinotage
Pinotage Plaza has opened its coffee shop, deli and sports bar along on Shunhuang Lu, 200 meters past Beidong Flower Market. Pinotage was a popular destination in the Lane Bridge Clubhouse for many years and this move has been eagerly anticipated by its loyal followers. The deli and coffee shop are open daily from 10am-5pm and the restaurant and sports bar are open for lunch and dinner.

Hidden Wine Cellar
Jenny Wang grocery store in Pinnacle Plaza has been doing some renovation above its wine section recently. The sign has come up, Jenny’s Hidden Wine Cellar, and we are eager to see whether this will just mean they move their entire cave to the new space, or if some bar-style dining will be available as well. Watch out for more details as they come.
