Did you know that Sweet Tooth, the once delivery-only bakery, has found a new home in an alleyway off Xinzhong Jie, just across from Beijing No. 55 Middle School?
Owner and baker Meilian Tan (pictured to the right with partner George Braga) started the business out of her humble apartment kitchen and moved into the new digs just six months ago. She started Sweet Tooth after getting frustrated by a fruitless search for baked goods that hadn’t been revamped for Chinese palates.
The shop features a revolving selection of desserts. When we visited, there were red velvet cupcakes, carrot cakes, and brownies ranging from RMB 25 to RMB 30. Kids can also enjoy a vanilla, strawberry, dark chocolate, or banana milkshake made with Vai Milano gelato (RMB 35).
Partnering with Tavalin Bagels and Two Guys and a Pie, Sweet Tooth now offers pies (starting from RMB 20) and toasted bagels (RMB 30-45 with a choice of cream cheese). Customers have the option of making it a meal by adding fries with a salad or gravy for RMB 15. Newer additions include toasted panini with chicken pesto or Italian cold cuts (RMB 50) using bread from Comptoirs de France. There are also pastas and salads.
Sweet Tooth also stocks up to 12 different flavors from Australian tea makers T2, including the fruity French Earl Grey and Pumping Pomegranate. A pot costs RMB 30 if enjoyed onsite and a cup-to-go costs RMB 20. Fans of black teas will love the Chai Latte (RMB 35), served hot in winter and cold in summer. Boxes of T2 teas are also available for purchase; an assorted box costs RMB 93 and a box of single-flavor tea costs RMB 140. Reusable mugs are available for RMB 45 is accompanied upon purchase with a free cup of coffee or tea.
The delivery service has been scaled back to a radius of 3km from the cafe. The fee is RMB 5 within 1km, RMB 10 between 1km and 2km, and RMB 15 between 2km and 3km. You can also order your favorite cake and pick it up from the shop.
