What age groups does Harrow Early Years cater for?
The Early Years department at Harrow Beijing caters for children from nine weeks to five years old. We have a crèche for the babies under two years old, after which they can progress to Pre-Nursery (2-3 years old), Nursery (3-4 years old) and Reception (4-5 years old), before joining the main school in Year One.
Children can stay a full day although we also offer half days for children up until the Nursery year. We have a dedicated building and both indoor and outdoor physical play spaces. We also have our own library and soft play room.
What system do we follow?
We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Guidance in line with all settings in England and Wales. This starts from birth and continues through to the age of five.
This is a play based, exploratory program which encourages children to be self-motivated and independent. At Harrow Beijing we can often be found up to our elbows in something sticky, messy or delightfully gooey!
Harrow Beijing is an English speaking school. However, in the Early Years it is not a requirement that they speak English before entry. Our play based curriculum means there is plenty of time for children to develop English skills in a relaxed setting before they enter formal schooling. We have dual language support staff who are able to provide comfort and help in Mandarin when necessary. All children from Pre-Nursery onwards have a daily Mandarin lesson with a teacher who is solely dedicated to teaching Early Years.
There are also specialist Music and P.E. lessons (including swimming once a week in our lovely learner pool) for all children from Pre-Nursery through to Reception.
Who do we accept?
Provided you are eligible to enter an International School we accept any child who passes an informal assessment. We accept boys and girls we think will thrive in the Harrow system as they make their way through from Early Years to Upper School. We are supportive of children who do not already speak English and this is not a pre-requisite of acceptance in the Early Years.
Spaces come up throughout the year and assessments can be done at any mutually convenient time. It may be worth considering putting your child in for an assessment ready for the new school year in August.
Why should you consider Harrow Beijing Early Years for your child?
The benefits of high quality Early Years experiences are many. Children have the chance to socialise and interact with different people, they can explore equipment and resources (which it may not be practical to have at home). They become confident learners and can develop their natural curiosity about the world around them.
Harrow Beijing upholds many traditional British values and operates a British curriculum for children from nine weeks to eighteen years old! Getting your child into our setting early helps prepare them for their entrance into the main school; it gives them time to settle and make friends, become familiar with faces and surroundings, begin to learn about some of the traditions and expectations of Harrow pupils.
Harrow’s capacity for offering places from nine weeks old means young children’s natural ability to process languages can begin well before they enter the demands of formal schooling.
We offer a caring, stimulating environment whose staff are dedicated to meeting the needs of the youngest children in the school.
