A fundraiser will be held this Friday at Home Plate Bar-B-Que (Sanlitun) for Jonathan Sokoloff, the international teacher involved in a scooter accident this past weekend. The event will take place Friday, May 1 from 11:30am-2:30pm with donation boxes available to help support Jonathan and his family.
Sokoloff remains on life support in the ICU at the international department of a local hospital. Sokoloff was involved in an accident in the early hours of Saturday morning near his home in Houshayu (Shunyi) while riding his scooter home. An American expat from Florida, he has been living in Beijing for almost two years. According to friends of Sokoloff, the expat planned to leave Beijing after this academic year and already had a job lined up in Salvador, Brazil.
Friends of Sokoloff have organized an indiegogo crowdfunding page where donations can be made on his behalf. Given the critical nature of Sokoloff’s condition, they say funds raised will go toward the cost of bringing his family to China, as well as to the ongoing medical expenses of his mother, whom Sokoloff has been helping support on his teaching salary. Friends of Sokoloff who are organizing the Homeplate Bar-B-Que event say that over USD 28,000 (approximately RMB 173,800) has been raised so far. If you’d like to make a donation, click here.
In addition to the crowdsourcing page and the event at Homeplate Bar-B-Que, the international school where Sokoloff is a teacher is also fundraising through multiple channels. The school reports having raised over RMB 200,000 so far.
