I realize I’ve been in Beijing for nearly 8 years now, but occasionally I am embarrassed to have missed certain landmarks. I know having kids is a legitimate excuse; they’re just so distracting and time-consuming! Who has the opportunity to explore the city anymore? But, never having entered this Schindler’s Tankstelle restaurant, a foreign enterprise that originally opened in 2003, was a clear oversight.
This was the site of a birthday party for our friend’s two-year old son and since it was such a gorgeous autumn day, the event was outdoors on their back patio that looks out into Ritan park. A beautiful environment to have a big meal!
If you’re keen for a huge plate of meat and a nice German beer, then this is the place for you. As a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised to find delicious homemade cheese pasta on the menu too. The salads were also tasty, but it was the warm bread and real butter brought to each table that proved the hit with the kids. Sometimes it’s just the little things that make a meal that much more memorable.
The birthday party was a grand success with a fantastic train cake and many kids’ hands on deck when the candles had been blown out, ready to peel off its chocolate chips and cookie decorations.
